Dr Teoh Tiong Ann is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon with over 30 years of experience. He regularly performs colonoscopy & gastroscopy procedures to investigate digestive symptoms, screen for colorectal conditions and identify abnormalities early.
Dr Teoh had held numerous leadership and professional appointments, reflecting his longstanding involvement in surgical practice and medical governance.
Preparation
You'll receive instructions before your procedure. Colonoscopy requires bowel preparation, while Gastroscopy generally requires fasting beforehand.
Sedation
Sedation will be given to help you stay relaxed and comfortable during the procedure.
Procedure
Depending on the procedure, the doctor examines the colon and rectum or the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. Biopsies or polyp removal may also be performed when necessary.
Recovery
You'll be monitored for a short period after the procedure and can usually return home the same day. If sedation is used, you should arrange for someone to accompany you home and avoid driving until advised that it is safe.
There is no single schedule that applies to everyone. How often a scope is needed depends on factors such as your previous findings, symptoms, medical history and individual risk factors.
Yes. If certain polyps are found during a colonoscopy, they may be removed during the same procedure. During either scope, Dr Teoh may also take tissue samples for further testing if an abnormal area is identified.
A normal scope can help rule out certain conditions, but it may not explain every digestive symptom. If your symptoms persist, Dr Teoh can review the findings and advise whether further investigation or other forms of treatment are appropriate.
